Product excitation in collision-induced dissociative ionization of acetone: Internal energy distribution

Abstract

Charge stripping of a neutral acetone beam, C3H6O, produced by the unimolecular fragmentation of a proton-bound dimer by the reaction [(C3H6O)2H]+ → C3H6O +[C3H7O]+, was studied for various target gases. The singly-charged acetone ions, formed after charge stripping of the neutral acetone beam, contained a significant amount of internal energy (dependent on the collision gas), and its distribution was measured. Collision cross-sections, total and partial, were measured for charge stripping of acetone neutrals. Comparison of the present results with electron-transfer processes was also made.
