Radical molecular anions formed from organic molecules under negative-ion fast-atom bombardment conditions: An unexpected finding during studies on the metabolism of bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate

Abstract

Urinary metabolites of bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate were studied using fast-atom bombardment mass spectrometry (FAB-MS). It was found that the ß-glucosides of mono(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) phthalate and mono(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate gave radical molecular unions, M ·, under negative-ion FAB conditions. This was also shown to occur for the methyl ester of mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate ß-glucuronide, an artefact formed during the work-up procedure.
