Abstract

The homogeneous isomerization of toluene-1-14C under the influence of aluminium bromide and hydrogen bromide (mole ratio C6H5-CH3: Al2Br6·HBr = 6:1) proceeds via a series of consecutive 1,2-shifts of the methyl group. The energy of activation amounts to 21.9 kcal/mole (± 4%).
