The Biocompatibility of Apoferritin-Encapsulated PbS Quantum Dots

A PbS quantum dot encapsulated into the hollow core of an apoferritin protein (see image) offers several advantages over existing composites based on quantum dots including a lower level of cytotoxicity, differential toxicity between healthy and cancerous cells, emission tunable in the near-infrared wavelength range of interest for bioimaging, water solubility and stability, and the same mobility as that of apoferritin.
