Fabrication of a new macroporous calcium carbonate nanocomposite is demonstrated using calcium carbonate hexahydrate. Magnetite nanoparticles are incorporated into the highly hydrated carbonate precursor and microwaving is used to convert the crystals into polycrystalline, vaterite blocks with open nanoarchitectures and retention of the original dimensions. Co-catalyst activity of the composite material is demonstrated for photocatalytic water oxidations.
