Large area two dimensional gold nanorod arrays are fabricated on block copolymer templates after a facile plasma etching process. Either side-by-side or end-to-end assemblies could be obtained simply because of dimensional commensurability. The sub-50 nm nanorod array with excellent position selectivity has many potential applications in optoelectronic, catalytic, SERS and sensing fields.
