      For most mechanical engineers mechatronics is the combination of actuators, sensors, electronics and software. This paper showed that the mechanics is an essential part of a mechatronical system as well. Mostly there is a clear tool chain break in documentation systems between mechanics and electronics/software. The processes do not work hand in hand. Thus this paper showed how an integrated design approach leads to an improvement of the product system stability and to a higher level of safety and availability.

      We present a contextual model for software-intensive system development to guide the adoption and adaptation of agile software development practices, especially when the context of the project departs significantly from the idea, agile “sweet spot”: large systems, distributed development environment, safety-critical systems, system requiring a novel architecture, or systems with an unorthodox business model or governance model.

      Traceability is central to medical device software development and essential for regulatory approval, but it can be difficult for organisations to successfully implement. In this paper, we outline the development and implementation of Med-Trace, a lightweight software traceability process assessment and improvement method developed specifically for the medical device industry. We also present and discuss our findings from two industry-based Med-Trace assessments.

      To encourage cross-domain communication in safety-critical areas we compared the new standard ISO 26262 for the automotive industry with existing regulations of the medical device industry. Although a large number of activities coincide, differences exist in the vocabulary and the way the standards are interpreted. To illustrate the synergy that might be obtained by a more standardized approach to software development, we point out two areas (tool qualification and usability) where one domain might learn from the other.

      It is well-known that process improvement change requires “tools-processes-people.” Engineers have spent most energy on the tools and processes, but everything is done by people, and success depends on people and their competencies. The increasing focus on people is reflected in many change models; some are discussed in this paper.

      This paper introduces a framework of factors that influence software process improvement (SPI) initiatives in micro-sized and small-sized software enterprises and a methodology to evaluate and control these factors. This framework includes 132 factors grouped in six categories. Additionally, we specify their properties, their value scales, and the property values for each factor. SPI managers could use this framework to evaluate and control potential threats to SPI initiatives and to propose better SPI strategies.
