The paper presents and evaluates novel test prioritization methods that are based on the state-based models of the system under test; in contrast, the existing test prioritization methods rely on the source-code. An analytical framework for the evaluation of test prioritization methods that may reduce the cost of evaluation as compared to the observation-based framework is also presented. The results of an empirical study indicate that system models may improve the effectiveness of test prioritization with respect to early fault detection. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
