We present this brief report to readers of the Journal on editorial operations for JRST during the 2011 calendar year. Additional information on JRST and JRST initiatives can be found in our reports at http://ejrst.net. Comments or questions are welcome on the website.
The 2010 ISI Impact Factor ratings were released during the summer of 2011, and we are pleased to announce the Journal achieved an impact factor of 2.78. This makes JRST the 4th ranked journal in the Education/Educational Research category and the preeminent journal in our field.
For the 2011 calendar year, the JRST editorial staff processed a total of 444 submissions, compared with 394 for 2010 (Calabrese-Barton, Krajcik, Geier, Bills, & Hokayem, 2010). This 14% increase in submissions to the Journal continues a pattern of growth that has persisted now for many years.
For decisions made in 2011, the acceptance ratio for the Journal was 14.5%, which is consistent with the acceptance ratio for previous years.
In 2011, 43% of the articles received by JRST came from countries outside the United States, a moderate increase over the previous year and the highest rate of international submissions ever for the Journal. The largest contributing country was Turkey, followed by Australia, Taiwan, Great Britain, Israel, Spain, Germany, and South Africa. In all, articles were received from a total of 32 nations.
Time from acceptance to publication has continued to improve in the past year and is now averaging approximately 2 months. That is the fastest time-to-publication in the Journal's history, and reflects our desire to get accepted work out to the community as rapidly as possible. As a result, we are seeing substantial increases in JRST articles being cited in the same year of publication. With the continued increase in submissions, average time in review has lengthened to 96 days, which is acceptable but does leave room for improvement as we work to build processes to address the increasing submission load.
The editorial team of the Journal continues to pursue a number of other initiatives in keeping with our vision as the Journal heads toward its 50th year of publication. Last month's edition saw the introduction of abstracts in the author's native language, this month pilots the introduction of video highlights to feature articles, and the coming months will see the roll-out of our new web presence at http://ejrst.net.
