This Volume is dedicated to Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Rudolf Hoppe, who is regarded the nestor of solid state inorganic chemistry, on the occasion of his 90th birthday on October 29, 2012. Surrounding his portrait (Picture: Nachrichten aus Chemie, Technik und Laboratorium, 1982), his greatest scientific achievements are highlighted by symbolic sketches: the discovery of XeF2, the first binary nobel gas fluoride, his realization of exotic oxidation states for transition metals, demonstrated at the examples of Cu4+, Co4+ and Ni1+, and his conceptual approaches aiming at classifying and understanding structures of extended solids.
