The cover picture shows the structural formula of the new N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) “4,5-dicyano-1,3-dimesitylimidazol-2-ylidene” (middle) and the X-ray structures of its precursor 4,5-dicyano-1,3-dimesityl-2-(pentafluorophenyl)-2,3-dihydroimidazole (bottom), the [AgCl(NHC)]-complex (top) on the left side and the [RhCl(COD)(NHC)]-complex (top) and [RhCl(CO)2(NHC)]-complex (bottom) on the right side. For the first time, a 1,3-diarylated 4,5-dicyanoimidazoline could be synthesized. Via thermolysis of the imidazoline, the corresponding [AgCl(NHC)]-complex could be formed and used as transmetallation agent for the preparation of the [RhCl(COD)(NHC)]- and the [RhCl(CO)2(NHC)]-complex. The sterical demand of the new NHC was determined using the crystallographic data of the RhI complexes and the electronic properties could be calculated from infrared spectroscopic data of the [RhCl(CO)2(NHC)]-complex by determination of the Tolman Electronic Parameter.
