The nurse-midwife is in an ideal position in her relationship with the expectant family to initiate anticipatory guidance regarding infant care. This article gives a brief summary of the state of the art from the pediatric viewpoint with respect to feeding, physical care, stimulation and developmental expectations, in the hope that it will provide a basis for teaching in the prenatal period.
