ABSTRACT

The need to separate normal healthy newborns weighing less than 5.5 pounds from the restrictions of the Special Care Baby Units is frequently voiced by nursery staffs, postpartum units, and parents, alike. In Britain, midwives have been instrumental in instituting pilot projects to form transitional units for the care of mothers and their small babies, (1.8–2.5 kg or 3.14–5.8 lb birth weight).
