Twelve CNMs from private nurse-midwifery practices in NYC were interviewed for this retrospective study that looks at factors that should be considered when establishing a private nurse-midwifery practice. This study focuses on four processes: 1) commitment to the goal of establishing a private nurse-midwifery service; 2) choosing a “birth setting;” 3) evolution of a partnership or evolution of a solo practice; and 4) negotiation for physician backup.
