ABSTRACT

The literature on usual clinical parameters for dating is reviewed. The first trimester bimanual exam, initial auscultation of fetal heart tones, assessments of fundal height, and reported date of quickening are discussed in the context of establishing gestational age. Nurse-midwifery management of the pregnancy that is either “size ahead of dates” or “size behind dates” is presented, with emphasis on the importance of maternal nutrition.
