    • Linda Wheeler is an associate professor at Oregon Health Sciences University Nurse-Midwifery Education Program. She received her certificate in nurse-midwifery from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 1971. Her MN is from the University of Washington, and her EdD is from Highland University. She teaches and practices full-scope midwifery within the Oregon Health Sciences University nurse-midwifery faculty practice.

This article describes a variety of ways to help novice students learn the nurse-midwifery skills required when caring for laboring women. The influences of learning style, undergraduate nursing experience, and previous work settings are discussed. The art of nurse-midwifery is emphasized, and ways to encourage and support students are discussed.
