She received her BSc (Physical Therapy) from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, and her MD from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. She was a clinical professor in the Department of Family Practice at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She was a co-director of the Collaboration for Maternal and Newborn Health and a founding member of the South Community Birth Program.
