New effort to protect marine areas

With his days in office numbered, U.S. President Bill Clinton on May 26 issued an executive order calling for tougher protection for some ocean and coastal resources, and he also called for steps to conserve coral reefs in Hawaii.

The executive order directs the Departments of Commerce and Interior to develop a scientifically based, comprehensive national system of marine protected areas that represent varied U.S. marine ecosystems and natural and cultural resources. The order also calls for strengthening the protection of existing protected areas and establishing new or expanded areas.
