Update on U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Initiative

  • Randy Showstack

While carbon plays a critical role in the Earth system and in potential global climate change, not enough is known about the element, its cycle, and global effects of human activity to accurately determine the behavior of the planet's climate system in the future, say scientists involved in an initiative to fill in these knowledge gaps. A US. carbon cycle science initiative, discussed during a briefing at the AGU spring meeting on June 1, could help to address some key scientific questions about carbon and CO2 and their relationship to the global climate in a more integrated and coordinated manner, scientists say.
