Apparent water formations in Mars images elicit puzzlement, enthusiasm

Scientists poring over images of Mars taken by NASA's Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) have detected geological features which they say could have been formed by liquid water flowing in the recent geological past—anywhere from millions of years ago to moments ago.

While some earlier evidence has indicated that some water likely exists on Mars in the form of ice and vapor, the new findings set the clock forward by suggesting the presence of geologically recent liquid water.
