Abstract

When Margaret Leinen went house-hunting in the Washington, D.C. area after being named last year as assistant director for geosciences at the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF),her realtor had a global positioning system (GPS) device in the car.

That technology is an example of the growing capacities in integrated observing systems, Leinen told an audience at the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography on June 30. Leinen said the growth of such systems is at the heart of a revolution leading to new opportunities and capabilities in the geosciences.
