The first letter went out on March 10, three months after former Los Alamos National Laboratory scientist Wen Ho Lee was jailed on 59 counts that he copied US. nuclear weapons secrets. When that note and two subsequent ones to US. Attorney General Janet Reno only managed to solicit a form letter response from the acting chief of the Justice Department's Internal Security Section, the three presidents of the US. National Academies on August 31 issued an open letter to Reno calling for fair treatment for Lee.
