Quaternary Climates, Environments and Magnetism

Magnetism has a habit of turning up in different areas within the Earth sciences and defining new disciplines. One obvious example is magnetostratigraphy. Another is the subject of this book—environmental magnetism—which is the interpretation of environmental conditions and past climate from the record of variations in the magnetic characteristics of sediments. With its rapid and relatively straightforward magnetic measurements, the field has already had a major impact on our understanding of the paleoclimatology and the paleoenvironmental conditions of our planet.
