Abstract

AGU has gone on record to strongly support the retention of the National Fire Protection Association Standard NFPA 780, “Standard for the Installation of Lightning Protection Systems.” The AGU Committee on Atmospheric and Space Electricity (CASE) has submitted a peerreviewed white paper to the Boston-based NFPA that provides evidence, dating back to the 1700s, of the effectiveness of the use of conventional lightning protection systems. This paper is available on the CASE Web site at http://CASE.AGU.org/NFPAreport.pdf. The white paper, signed by 24 AGU members, was submitted to NFPA in response to a solicitation requesting technical substantiation for retaining NFPA 780. All responses to the solicitation will be made available for public review and comment by the NFPA Standards Council (http://www.nfpa.org/CODES/). To obtain the documents, contact Leona Nisbet, Recording Secretary (lnisbet@nfpa.org).
