The following article appeared in the Louisville Kentucky Times on September 6, 1886, a week after the M-7.3 Charleston, South Carolina earthquake. In keeping with the spirit of the era, the article appeared in other newspapers as well, with neither its author nor its original source ever cited. One can, however, hazard a wild guess that the author was a newspaperman who had heard more than a few earthquake tales that week. The article is transcribed verbatim, which is to say, if you see something that doesn't make sense, don't ask us—we don't understand it either!
