Columbus Iselin indeed was the first person convinced that the temperature must have an effect on sound propagation that would have military implications. He had organized experiments for a number of intensity range runs made in the Caribbean between U.S.S. Semmes and Atlantis in 1938 under many conditions. He also had temperature-depth-salinity measurements recorded simultaneously at each location. The interpretation of the results was unclear.
