Abstract

These two volumes present research stemming from a European Science Foundation Program called “The Response of the Earth System to Impact Processes” (IMPACT). The goal of this program, which commenced in 1998 and will culminate in 2002, is to bring together European scientists to conduct interdisciplinary work on problems associated with impacts and their effects on the Earth system, emphasizing studies of environmental, biological, and geological changes, and evaluation of their consequences for the biodiversity of ecosystems. Although IMPACT is a European program, many non-Europeans participate in the workshops, short courses, and other activities.
