Council and Executive Committee actions 2001 Fall Meeting

  • Anonymous

The AGU Council approved the renaming of existing Technical Committees to Focus Groups at its 14 December meeting. The purpose of this change is to more aptly portray the role of the committees as representing scientific areas of current interest that do not fall neatly within a single Section. All members may affiliate with either a Section or a Focus Group (See Editorial on p. 14).

Among other actions taken by the Council were the approval of the 2002 budget, with its plan to use endowment-type income derived from the Union's reserves to cover the core expenses of outreach programs and thereby reduce the need for surpluses to be generated by publications, meetings, and other services. The Council also elected James L. Burch,a past president of the SPA Section, and Jeffrey J. Park, president of the Seismology Section, to serve as AGU representatives on the AIP Governing Board.
