Building a home for the biogeosciences: Challenges for understanding terrestrial ecosystems

In recent years, biological, geological, and atmospheric studies have been combined in name and practice and the term ‘biogeosciences’ has quickly entered the scientific lexicon. AGU has recognized the biogeosciences as a vital and rapidly developing field through the creation of a new section in 2000. In reports from the National Science Board [2000] and the National Research Council of The National Academies [1999], the central role of coupled biologic, geologic, and atmospheric systems in the Earth system has been highlighted.
