John I. Ewing (1924–2001)

John I. Ewing died on 15 November 2001, in Falmouth, Massachusetts. An AGU Fellow and a recipient of the Maurice Ewing Medal (1982), he had been a member since 1958 (Seismology). He contributed significantly to key developments in marine seismology for more than two decades.

Near the entrance to the Houston Area Research Center (HARC), where John Ewing worked for many years in the 1980s and 1990s, there is a statue of Isaac Newton that bears his familiar quotation: “If I have seen farther than others, it is because I was standing on the shoulders of giants.”
