National earthquake program comes under scrutiny

The lead agency managing the U.S. National Earthquake Hazard Reduction Program (NEHRP) came under heavy scrutiny during an 8 May hearing on the program's re-authorization, held by a science subcommittee of the U.S. House of Representatives. Funding levels for NEHRP, which have significantly decreased in real dollars since the 1970s, also were criticized during the hearing.

Still, the earthquake program itself generally was praised during the hearing as being a successful and valuable, but underfunded national asset at a time when earthquake hazards are increasing.
