New U.S. weather forecasting system approved

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has signed an agreement with several other U.S. agencies to develop a new and improved U.S. Weather Research and Forecasting system, the agency announced on 19 August.

The system, which is now in the testing phase, is expected to produce high-resolution forecasts far more detailed than current operational models, according to NOAA. The system also could prompt closer ties between the research and operational forecasting communities, the agency indicated.
