Windstorm impact reduction legislation finds support, but presents some concerns

  • Randy Showstack

Legislation to establish a National Windstorm Impact Reduction Program, provide improved federal interagency coordination, and encourage mitigation measures was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives Science Committee on 29 March.

At a 24 March hearing, held by the House Science Subcommittees on Research and on Environment, Technology, and Standards, witnesses generally were supportive of the legislation's aims and the mitigation components of the proposed program. These components include an improved understanding of windstorms, and windstorm impact assessment and reduction.
