We are happy to see that our article [Sun et al., 2004] on the anomalous cold water observed along the mid-Atlantic coast generated interest among readers. We do agree with Schwing and Pickett ] that the upwelling along the east coast of the United States is not as common or as strong as on the west coast. Schwing and Pickett have shown that the upwelling index (UI) found by Sun et al. is well above the 38-year monthly mean and had exceeded 2 standard deviations above normal.
