Concern over NASA mission statement changes

U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.) expressed concern about a change in NASAs mission statement—which eliminated the phrase “to understand and protect the home planet”—in a 31 July letter to NASA Administrator Michael Griffin.

“At a time in which evidence grows on an almost daily basis of the potentially severe impacts of climate change, we find it inexplicable that NASA apparently no longer views protecting and understanding our home planet as a priority” they wrote.
