The Scientific Ocean Drilling Vessel (SODV) is expected to cost more than initial estimates but other U.S. National Science Foundation-sponsored major research facilities currently under construction are largely running on schedule and within budget, NSF Deputy Director Kathie Olsen told the U.S. National Science Board on 9 August

The SODV project, in which a ship will be converted into a deep-sea drilling vessel, is about 7% complete, Olsen said. NSF and the Joint Oceanographic Institutions are preparing to negotiate with bidders on this conversion. However, the cost of the project is expected to be higher than anticipated due to increased steel and oil prices, she said
