On “Johann von Lamont: A pioneer in geomagnetism”

I offer a few brief comments and additional information with regard to the article by H.Soffel (Eos, 87(25), 247,2006) on the work of Johann von Lamont.

In the early years of Lamont's directorship at the Munich Observatory, he was assisted by Georg von Neumayer (1826–1909). Geomagnetism was Neumayer's first and greatest passion, and later in his life he played a leading role in international geomagnetic cooperation and the First International Polar Year (1882–1883).
