[1] Specular patterns in the atmosphere caused by ice crystals with preferably horizontal orientation are quantitatively described by use of a bidirectional phase function for a fluttering plate. The main qualitative features of the sun pillars and overground light pillars are explained. Possibilities to retrieve the probability density for orientation of the preferably oriented crystals from the specular patterns are discussed.
