On 5 March, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced the identification of seven new species of bamboo coral discovered during a November 2007 NOAAfunded mission in the deep waters of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument (previously known as the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument). Six of these species may represent entirely new genera, and scientists expect to identify more new species as analysis of samples continues.
