I thank Gerald Stanhill and Spencer Weart for their interest in my Forum (Eos, 91(15), 134–135, 13 April 2010). Strictly speaking, I agree with Stanhill that the terms “greenhouse effect” and “greenhouse gases” are inaccurate, as the atmospheric greenhouse effect is different from the effect in a greenhouse, in which a glass cover warms the air inside primarily by preventing the warm air from mixing with the air outside. My more moderate suggestion in the Forum is to drop the related and confusing phrase “greenhouse effect of clouds.”
