In Brief: International Year of Chemistry

[1] The United Nations has designated 2011 as the International Year of Chemistry (IYC). As part of IYC, chemical societies and institutions around the world are organizing various activities to promote chemistry and its ability to improve lives. IYC, timed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Marie Curie's 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of radium, is an initiative of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). In the United States, the American Chemical Society, in partnership with other organizations, is promoting educational and outreach programs to increase public appreciation of chemistry and increase interest in chemistry in young people. More information on IYC can be found at http://www.chemistry2011.org andhttp://iyc2011.acs.org/.
