President's Budget Proposal Favors NSF, Though Congress Could Push for Reductions

[1] The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) is one of the winners in the Obama administration's proposed budget for fiscal year (FY) 2012, which begins on 1 October, with a proposed funding level of $7.767 billion; this would be an increase of 13% above the congressionally enacted FY 2010 budget level. However, the administration's proposed budget is just a starting point for discussions. Congress has approved a 2-week budget continuing resolution (CR) for the current fiscal year, 2011. A longer-term CR passed by the House of Representatives (HR 1) could dramatically cut this year's funding for some federal agencies and also affect budget discussions for FY 2012.
