Real-time stream gage information for smartphones

Abstract

WaterAlert, a service of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), sends text or e-mail messages to smartphones about rising levels of nearby rivers and streams. The service also can provide updates about groundwater levels, water temperatures, rainfall, and water quality from more than 7000 USGS real-time stream gages around the country. “WaterAlert can be used by emergency managers and the general public alike as a first alert for a developing flood,” according to Bill Werkheiser, USGS associate director for water.
