The stratosphere: Dynamics, transport, and chemistry

On an October weekend in 2008, scientists gathered in New York City for PlumbFest, a symposium and celebration centered on the field of stratospheric research. Thirteen influential speakers explored the latest developments in the study of the middle atmosphere. The presentations, formalized and collected, became the AGU monographThe Stratosphere: Dynamics, Transport, and Chemistry, edited by Lorenzo M. Polvani, Adam H. Sobel, and Darryn W. Waugh. In this interview, Waugh talks toEos about the origins of PlumbFest, the Antarctic ozone hole, and the role the stratosphere plays in controlling the weather.
