Emerging earth science research opportunities at U.S. National Science Foundation

“The Earth sciences will become increasingly prominent in the 21st century as humanity confronts daunting challenges,” states a new report that identifies seven overarching and emerging research opportunities in the Earth sciences for the U.S. National Science Foundation's Division of Earth Sciences (NSF EAR). These challenges “are particularly poised for rapid progress during the next decade,” according to the report. New Research Opportunities in the Earth Sciences, issued by a committee of the U.S. National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academies on 13 December, recommends broad areas of research “involving major dynamic geosystems that can only be fully quantified by interdisciplinary approaches” and that address evolving science requirements for programs supporting investigator-driven disciplinary research, problem-focused programs involving multidisciplinary research, and equipment-oriented programs for new instrumentation and facilities.
