Report synthesizes findings from International Polar Year

The International Polar Year (IPY) 2007–2008 “was an outstanding success,” according to a National Research Council (NRC) report released 3 April. The report, Lessons and Legacies of the International Polar Year 2007–2008, synthesized reports from the thousands of scientists who participated in IPY. IPY was a coordinated international field campaign of observations, research, and analysis. Scientific observing and monitoring infrastructure was expanded, and scientists from more than 60 countries in a wide range of fields, including glaciology, atmospheric science, geoscience, space science, oceanography, biology, ecology, and the social sciences, participated in IPY activities.
