Abstract

A new computer-generated map shows (in a generalized way) the susceptibility of Wisconsin's groundwater to contamination. Physical characteristics of the geologic materials that overlie groundwater served as the basis of the map. Many of these materials offer groundwater a certain amount of protection from contaminants that might be transported by infiltrating water, but some materials provide more protection than others. The 20 levels of relative susceptibility shown on the map were derived from the interpreted ability of these materials to protect the groundwater.
