Hugh Heard 1931–1987

Hugh's talent for experimental research was precocious. He began work in David Griggs' laboratory as an undergraduate, and later, as a graduate student, earned on his M.S. thesis the comment “the best Ph.D. thesis by a master's student” from Griggs. His 1962 Ph.D. thesis on the transition from brittle to ductile deformation in crustal rocks is a textbook study in laboratory simulation of geological processes, still widely quoted and cited.
