Abstract

The Deep Geology Committee of the National Environment Research Council (NERC) is inviting interested scientists to submit proposals for research to complement the data being gathered by the British Institutions Reflection Profiling Syndicate (BIRPS).

BIRPS was established at Cambridge University (Cambridge, U.K.) in 1981 by NERC to study the lower crust and upper mantle. So far it has collected more than 10,000 km of reflection profiles on the continental shelf near the United Kingdom, using 15-s two-way travel times that measure to a depth of about 50 km.
