Abstract

Since the last “News from NSF” (Eos, June 23, 1987, p. 594), the programs supporting solar and upper-atmosphere research at the National Science Foundation (NSF) have undergone major change. In fact, the Division of Atmospheric Sciences (ATM) has been reorganized for the first time since it was created in 1975. Before October 1, 1987, the division was composed of the Centers and Facilities Section (CFS) and the Grants Program Section (GPS). In the reorganization, GPS was divided into the Lower Atmosphere Research Section (LARS) and the Upper Atmosphere Research Section (UARS).
